Leading Healthcare Organization Maintains Content Quality and Brand Control with Interwoven

Sunnyvale, Calif., and Vienna, VA, - July 7, 2003 - Interwoven (Nasdaq: IWOV), a leader in content management for the enterprise, and McFadyen Consulting announced today the implementation of a content management solution designed to meet the unique needs of the healthcare industry at the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) across its multiple hospital sites. Located in the Philadelphia region, the clinical components of UPHS include four hospitals, three multi-specialty satellite facilities, a primary-care physician network, and home care and hospice.

Based on the Interwoven content management platform, the solution was designed and launched by a combined McFadyen Consulting and UPHS team of engineers. The primary goal for the implementation was to provide a vehicle for hundreds of departments, divisions, and centers throughout the organization to contribute content to their departmental Web presences in a way that is consistent from a marketing brand perspective, is accurate and approved through an appropriate workflow, and provides the highest value for the UPHS patient and staff community. In addition, UPHS needed the ability to manage current content on the Website, expire outdated content, and notify content owners when aging content requires review and updates.

The primary audiences being targeted for the enhanced sites include:

  • Patients - Utilizing the site for researching hospital services and facilities;
  • Prospective patients - Accessing the site for health-related information and services;
  • Current and prospective medical students, residents and academic staff - Turning to the site for access to medical research resources and academic programs.

"Since implementing Interwoven, we've been able to allow our clients to contribute content directly to the Web, while maintaining control of the overall quality and branding of the Website," explained Nicole Lehman Muther, Web Director, Marketing, UPHS. "As a result, we've been able to manage increased demand while maintaining current staffing levels. We are very pleased with the success of the project to date, and look forward to rolling Interwoven throughout additional brand sites across the organization."

The Interwoven content management solution enabled UPHS to transition away from a fragmented approach that was managed separately at each departmental level, to a centralized enterprise solution that is more efficient from a cost savings and management perspective. Key benefits of the Interwoven investment include a more efficient use of staff time managing the overall online community, version control for updates to the site, and the ability to expire outdated content.

UPHS selected Interwoven as their platform for content management based on a comprehensive product feature set, including versioning and rollback, the need to ensure brand control across all touch points, and the ability to scale to multiple users across a variety of initiatives. Pilot divisions for the Interwoven rollout include PENN Cardiac Care, the brand that UPHS uses for all cardiology and cardiac surgery services, along with the Department of Radiology.

"In healthcare, as in any closely regulated industry, the quality and accuracy of information exposed to the public is critical to the perception of care provided by the organization," said Kevin Hayden, vice president of corporate marketing for Interwoven. "With Interwoven, the ability to deliver a consistent look and feel across Internet properties, along with the comfort afforded by versioning and roll-back capabilities, UPHS is positioned to help safeguard its brand as a superior healthcare facility."

McFadyen Consulting is a key Interwoven partner and has been very successful working with healthcare organizations to design and launch content management solutions.

"McFadyen Consulting worked very closely with us throughout the project, making sure our requirements were being met and managing the 'scope creep'," explained Tod Simons, Director of Technology, UPHS. "It was important to have the experience of McFadyen there to keep us headed in the right direction and to ensure our final product was what we needed to meet our overall goals."

Future plans for UPHS include completing the rollout of template and workflows to the rest of the System's Internet sites and extending Interwoven to Human Resources and Public Affairs via the intranet. Additionally, UPHS is looking to implement a portal strategy that channels critical patient and physician information to fill specific consumer requests.
